NIDA’s Role in the NIH HEAL Initiative

Highlights

  • As the lead federal agency supporting scientific research on drug use and addiction, NIDA co-leads the National Institutes of Health HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term®) Initiative with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The HEAL Initiative is a dynamic effort to develop new scientific solutions to the national opioid addiction and overdose public health crisis, alongside efforts to improve pain management.
  • Researchers are taking a variety of approaches to address growing rates of drug overdose and addiction, including conducting studies to improve prevention and treatment for opioid misuse and addiction and to better understand, manage and treat pain.
  • NIDA leads many of the research programs funded through the HEAL and supports hundreds of research projects under this Initiative.
